Operating outside the Big Law model, our collegial and collaborative firm enables associate attorneys to gain momentum in their careers and further their professional development through meaningful involvement in public and private projects that benefit communities across the United States.
Why consider us?
We are a boutique law firm with a national practice focused on complex and high-profile environmental, transportation, energy, infrastructure, tribal, and real estate matters. Nearly half of our practice groups and partners (and over a quarter of our attorneys as a whole) received recognition from Chambers & Partners in their 2022 USA rankings, reflecting our Firm’s outsized achievements and national recognition.
We are a collegial and collaborative firm devoted to providing the highest quality legal services to our clients while also ensuring attorneys and staff enjoy quality of life within and outside the office.
We believe that when you enjoy working with a great team, know that your contributions make a difference, and are able to pursue a fulfilling career without hindering personal life responsibilities and choices, your professional life can and should be more enjoyable and rewarding.
We are proud to be recognized for both the quality of our work and our associates’ opportunities to learn and grow. Our associates are uniquely positioned to have a significant impact for clients from day one, while also gaining valuable experience and training for the long term.
In this role, you will:
Serve as a key member of our Environmental and Native American Law and Policy practices, while also supporting related energy, transportation, infrastructure, and real estate matters as needed
Work directly with partners and clients on a variety of matters
Have opportunities for travel to meetings and hearings both within and beyond California
Be admitted to practice in the State of California and located in (or willing to relocate to) the San Francisco Bay Area
You will excel in this role by:
Having 1-3 years of relevant experience in Environmental and/or Native American law
Demonstrating exceptional writing, analytical, and advocacy skills necessary for transactional, regulatory, and litigation contexts
Adapting quickly in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment to successfully manage deadlines and proactively complete time-sensitive work
Being comfortable working both independently and in a team environment
Taking initiative and responsibility for meeting client needs and pursuing opportunities for skill development and improvement
Having the ability to successfully interact with clients and colleagues
You will stand out from other candidates if you have:
Experience in matters arising under the National Environmental Policy Act, California Environmental Quality Act, Endangered Species Act, National Historic Preservation Act, Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, Indian Reorganization Act, Indian Child Welfare Act, and/or Indian Gaming Regulatory Act
An entrepreneurial mindset
A collegial, team-focused approach to the practice of law
A strong record of academic excellence and leadership
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Demonstrated interest (personal or professional) in public policy relating to environmental, historic, or cultural resources; transportation and infrastructure projects; energy; and/or related fields
Position details: This is a full-time position to be located in our San Francisco office. We have an annual expectation of 1,600 billable hours for our associates, and we have incorporated our values into this target by counting approved pro bono hours toward the total. The salary range is $140,000 - $160,000 commensurate with experience. We offer medical, dental, vision, HSA, FSA, STD, LTD, group term life insurance, 401(k), PTO, and parental leave. Public officials and corporate executives with high profile public and private projects that must get planned and completed, call Kaplan Kirsch & Rockwell. Whether the project is a public project, has a nexus with a government entity, or merely requires deep knowledge of how government works, our attorneys are sought after – because we’ve seen it and done it before.
For companies or agencies with an important project on the horizon—whether it be important to you, to your region, or even to the nation—here is a snapshot of what it’s like to work with us:
We are collaborative. We are most effective when we work in teams, and that includes working closely with our clients. Our attorneys and clients depend on rich experience-sharing – we bounce ideas off our clients and each other.
We are lean. When you’re working with subject matter experts, you don’t need to add layers of unnecessary people. We staff with only the attorneys we need and each team attorney gets to know our client and its business well.
We understand public sector needs. We know how public sector needs are different from private sector needs. Many private sector clients come to us because ...we understand how to work with governments.
We are creative. Don’t expect a cookie-cutter approach. We design tailored, unique solutions – when you come to us and say “I have a problem,” you can have confidence that we’ll figure it out.
We are strategic. We study clients’ questions or problems from every possible angle, knowing the context from which our client is coming. Never reactive, we take a much more comprehensive view of our clients' needs and understand that client needs do not fit into neat legal disciplines. We know that our clients want solutions, not just legal answers.
The combination of these five attributes always produces better results and more successful outcomes for our clients.
