The Energy & Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for updating and monitoring the implementation of the Town’s Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan, as mandated by Provincial legislation. This position is also responsible for review of Energy Modelling Reports and related studies, monitoring and reporting the Town’s annual energy consumption and GHG emissions to ensure the Town is achieving Council-approved GHG emissions reduction targets; Undertaking research, data collection, and analysis to identify, assess, prioritize, and support the Town’s energy and sustainability initiatives including capital projects and operational/maintenance changes that reduce corporate energy consumption. The Energy & Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for representing the Town of Ajax on external committees and stakeholder advisory groups. The position provides presentations to Committees, Council, and Senior Management.
Key Duties
Leads the Town’s annual CDP disclosures and submissions.
Lead the development and implementation of the Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan, District Energy Feasibility Study
Leads the monitoring and implementation of sustainability-related plans/strategies including, but not limited to, the Ajax Climate Risk & Resiliency Plan, Textile Diversion Program Action Plan, Corporate Ban on Single Use Plastics Implementation Plan.
Completes annual monitoring and analysis of corporate energy use/GHG emissions and reports these results as required by legislation.
Supports the identification and prioritization of projects to reduce the Town’s GHG emissions and energy usage.
Supports community engagement and education initiatives with the goal of achieving community GHG reduction targets.
Supports the Policy and Sustainability Division of the Planning Section and coordinates research, project planning, and other major strategic initiatives.
Monitors, reviews, provides critical analysis, and provides recommendations and formal responses on matters of a policy and/or legislative nature originating from Provincial, Regional, and other municipal governments.
Oversees data collection and research activities that involve careful and critical analysis and strategic thinking.
Reviews all types of development applications, including official plan amendments, zoning by-law amendments, site plans and amendments, and draft plan of subdivision and condominiums.
Supports internal review, and manages peer review consultants, for reports submitted as part of all types of development applications.
Provides a high level of customer service regarding the Town’s environmental, sustainability and climate change programs.
Leads and/or participates in various internal and external committees.
Leads and liaises with Corporate Communications on outreach and communication plans.
Participates in annual budget planning activities and conducts required analysis to provide input into Sectional planning.
Prepares budget rationale and justification proposals for the capital budget and long-range capital forecasts.
Supports the identification and coordination of financial incentives associated with the Ajax Green Standard to development applicants, specifically for improved energy performance.
Supports the identification and prioritization of projects to reduce the Town’s GHG emissions and energy usage.
Qualifications/Skills
Four (4) year University degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Sustainability or a combination of education and experience deemed equivalent.
Credentials in any or all of the following: Professional Engineering (P. Eng.), Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Energy Auditor (CEA), Environmental Professional (EP), and/or Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP).
Minimum five (5) years relevant and current work experience, with a focus/specialization in sustainability, climate change, energy conservation and management, and quantifying energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and interpreting the results, or a combination of experience deemed equivalent.
Exceptional knowledge of legislation, municipal functions, provincial plans and policy, federal plans and policy, official plans, climate change initiatives, green development standards and climate science.
Advanced knowledge and demonstrated implementation of legislative requirements under the Planning Act and policy framework in place within the Provincial Planning and Environmental Protection documents.
Superior verbal and written communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills to develop good working relationships with consultants, the public, internal staff, and elected officials to address complex and potentially controversial issues.
Excellent organizational, time management and planning skills.
Advanced ability in M365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).

What is Offered to Staff
Rate of Pay: $46.76 - $49.48 per hour.
Hours of Work: This is a unionized position that works 35 hours per week. The hours of work are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and are in accordance with the CUPE Collective Agreement.
