The Department of Animal Sciences at North Dakota State University is pleased to announce recruitment for a twelve-month, tenure-track 100% Swine Extension position at the rank of Assistant Professor.
The Department of Animal Sciences is in the College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources (CAFSNR) and provides instruction to over 330 undergraduate students and 25 graduate students. The Department is also a leader in extension and engagement programs to farmers, allied industry and the public, and conducts internationally recognized research into the nutrition, genetics, reproduction, health, and management of livestock. North Dakota is poised to become an important hub and a progressive area of animal agriculture and offers excellent opportunities for collaborations with industry scientists and producers. Plans for expansion of the NDSU Swine Unit are underway, which will effectively double sow capacity, significantly increase market hog production, and result in state-of-the-art research facilities for conducting trials dedicated to precision management, feeding, stress physiology, animal welfare, and health.
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a comprehensive, nationally recognized and extramurally funded extension program. Key responsibilities include conducting applied studies and demonstrations on campus and commercial swine farms, as well as working with Extension agents and specialists in support of their education and research programs.
Peer-reviewed research and extension publications, extension factsheets, social media participation, and documenting accomplishments in extension programs are expected. The individual will be part of a team that will enhance the Department’s overall swine research and extension programs and is expected to work with colleagues in other departments in the CAFSNR, in ND Cooperative Extension, ND Department of Agriculture, ND Pork Council, ND Livestock Alliance, and other industry organizations that help meet the educational and research needs of the swine industry. The selected candidate will be expected to foster an environment that is welcoming of all groups. In addition, the successful candidate will provide service to the department, college, university and the profession of animal science.
Required Education and Experience: A Ph.D. in animal science or equivalent degree with an emphasis in swine nutrition or closely related field. Preferred Qualifications and Experience: (1) effective written and oral communication skills, and documented success in cooperative extension programs (2) capability in swine nutrition research as demonstrated by a scholarly publication record, (3) knowledge of and interaction with the swine industry, (4) demonstrated ability to work in a team-based, collaborative environment to solve problems, (5) potential or established ability to secure extramural funding, and (6) experience in applying traditional and modern approaches to swine research.
