The high school principal will be responsible for ensuring the successful implementation of SAS strategic initiatives in grades 9-12 in order to fulfill the school’s mission and vision. To this end, the high school principal is charged with overseeing all elements of the SAS academic and social-emotional program from grades 9-12, providing a clear focus on student learning and achievement. In partnership with central leaders, the principal will also have oversight of operational functions. This individual will lead and directly supervise deputy principals, faculty, and classified staff in the development and implementation of critical strategic initiatives. In coordination with the Office of Learning and other division principals, s/he will also provide leadership in all areas of teaching. Leading the Learning - Demonstrated successful instructional leadership experience to lead and participate within the daily teaching and learning community, focusing on a responsive curriculum, personalized learning and effective teaching practices.
- Articulate the vision for teaching and learning at SAS, support the vision with short and long-term plans for the high school, and sustain a culture conducive to continuous improvement across the high school division.
- Provide coherent and consistent learning experiences for students by ensuring commonalities in the areas of content, skills, dispositions and expectations throughout and across grade levels
- Provide coherent and consistent learning experiences for students by ensuring the use of authentic, meaningful assessment tools
- Improve student learning within the high school by leading the ongoing collection, analysis, and use of information about student learning (both qualitative and quantitative) to identify next steps in learning, intervention strategies, curriculum adaptations, etc.
- Lead learning-focused and collaborative high school teams in line with the SAS strategic plan, using structures and resources provided. Build effective teams through recruitment, orientation, coaching, mentoring, and professional learning.
- Provide leadership in the organization, delivery, and evaluation of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) across the high school. Oversee the continued development of professional learning communities to foster a common PLC culture across the system. Supervise goal-setting processes for high school PLCs to assist with establishing professional learning opportunities to support the work of faculty members and divisions.
- Oversees the continued development of and support for PLC Coaches and other middle-level instructional leaders.
- Provide leadership in the organization, delivery, and evaluation of social-emotional programming, including an advisory program, across the high school.
- Provide change leadership and management oversight in the high school campus upgrade project (SAS Reimagined)
- Provide leadership to a comprehensive communication plan that includes both internal and external communication.
- Provide direction in and maintain up-to-date knowledge of educational reform and its application in the high school context, and participate in on-going training to enhance professional skills and improve the school’s work towards its vision. Serve as an instructional leader role model.
Managing the Learning Manage the time, energy and work of the high school to have an optimum impact on student learning. This will include: - Manage the assignment of students and teachers to classes, including the development of the master schedule.
- Manage meetings within the high school in order to have the maximum impact on student learning
- Manage communications within the high school to have the maximum impact on student learning
- Manage the budget and inventory processes efficiently to ensure all resources have the optimum impact of student learning
- In coordination with the Office of Learning, manage accurate and viable curricular information and its availability to have the optimum impact on student learning
- Provide leadership and effective supervision for staff members assigned to the division in order to stimulate each individual’s growth and improve instructional effectiveness (inclusive of regular classroom visitations)
Other Duties - Serve on the superintendent’s Senior Leadership Team participating in strategic decision-making that impacts all areas of school leadership and management.
- Facilitate and develop positive and effective communication and relationships in a complex environment with the various constituents of the community including parents, students, faculty, division leadership, and central administration, as well as the international school network at large
- Provide for health, safety, and welfare of students and staff to ensure the development and enhancement of a safe school environment, including overseeing high school discipline.
- Recognize and strengthen personal performance through self-analysis of actions, participating in professional development activities, exploring educational research, participating in professional organizations, and through formal renewal programs.
- Perform other related duties and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the superintendent or deputy superintendent
- Collaborate and co-lead with the leadership team on the hiring of diverse, quality educators for the division and school
- Provide support for the implementation of academic school trips and events, including overseeing the budget.
- Help create a safe, supportive environment for students by supporting students' behavior by applying restorative practices, and working collaboratively with teaching teams, counselors, Deans of Student Lifeand Deputy Principals.
