Job Summary:
Vanderbilt Health – Executive Search Team is conducting a national search for a Chief Nursing Officer, Vanderbilt University Hospital (VUH).
Accountable to: President, Vanderbilt University Hospital and VUMC System Chief Nursing Officer (SCNO)
The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is responsible for the vision and direction of the practice standards of Nursing in the care of patients at VUH. The CNO inspires and facilitates an interdisciplinary team approach to the delivery of care. This includes a nursing environment in which collaboration is valued and excellence in clinical care, education, and research is promoted and achieved. The CNO ensures the continued advancement of the profession of Nursing at VUH.

Responsibilities:
Leadership and Strategic Vision
CNO serves as a key member of the VUH Senior Executive Team. In conjunction with other executive leaders, participates in strategic planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical programs and services, assuring appropriate resources for the delivery of care.
Builds relationships with outside experts, professional associates and colleagues to ensure leading edge clinical and service practices for the region. Maintains exposure to and knowledge of regulatory, legislative, and governing bodies impacting healthcare. Stays up-to-date on current and proposed legislation and regulations that affect patient care.
Continue leading clinical care transformation to an integrated single system of care, positioned for success in a value-based health care market focused on populations as well as individuals.
Recruitment, Retention, and Staffing Effectiveness
In partnership with key stakeholders, including Human Resources, provides leadership and direction for the development of strategies to promote the recruitment and retention of nursing and other patient care staff, staff pipeline/workforce development programs and recognition of excellence in Nursing.
In collaboration with nursing leadership and other executives, effectively designs leadership programs to create a succession pipeline for nurses into management and ultimately senior leadership.
Supports a safe culture that assures accountability and respects values and individual contributions. Enables an environment that encourages service excellence and cooperative collaboration both internally and externally. Creates a culture that recognizes the value of people and teamwork through embracing excellence, diversity and inclusion, accountability and results.
Patient Care Practice Standards, Safety, and Quality Outcomes
Ensures nursing practice is evidence-based to optimize clinical care and outcomes through a System approach for care delivery optimization and service line practice and projects that align with the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
Promotes and fosters a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, and the coordination of care across disciplines.
Standardizes nursing practice across VUH to improve and sustain outcomes for nurse-sensitive quality indicators.
Partners with Patient Experience and Patient Engagement leaders to ensure a robust, integrated, and standardized plan exists with nursing and the health care team for continual improvement in the patient experience.
Understands and articulates patient care standards reflected in federal and state regulations, and organizational policies and procedures.
Professional Nursing Practice
Serves as the leader of Shared Governance throughout VUH and promotes the inclusion of nursing staff in shared decision-making in their professional practice environment.
Upholds and promotes professional practice standards congruent with ANCC Magnet designation.
Collaborates with the System CNO in the analysis, design, implementation and evaluation of information and communication systems that enhance individual and population health outcomes, improve patient care, and strengthen the clinician-patient relationship.
Utilizes and participates in generating research findings for the establishment of standards, practices, and patient care models in the organization. Participates in studies that provide outcome measurements. Disseminate research findings to patient care team members. Teaches and mentors others to routinely utilize evidenced-based data and research.
Leadership
Provides leadership within the patient care services area throughout VUH, to ensure patient care consistent with the mission and vision of VUMC.
Collaborates with all regional and system nursing and administrative leaders to develop and implement a shared vision that includes a focus on coordinating quality patient care and nursing practices that relates to and supports the overall system strategy, advances research, and optimize system resources.
Leads, sponsors and participates in a wide variety of hospital based and system-level initiatives, committees and task forces.
Provides expert advice and counsel to senior leadership and the executive leadership team regarding nursing issues impacting patient care.

A minimum of 10 years administrative experience with increasing scope of responsibility, in an academic health care setting.
