PGY1 purpose
PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two PGY2 residencies.
United Hospital’s overall program goals include:
• Development of comprehensive, patient-centered pharmaceutical care skills
• Fostering collaboration with other health care providers to achieve positive patient outcomes
• Expansion of critical thinking, communication and leadership skills
• Cultivation of self-evaluation and self-learning skills
• Appreciation of the inter-relationship of clinical, technology and distribution systems to provide effective and safe pharmacy services
Pharmacy residents develop advanced practice skills in managing drug therapy for a variety of disease states, as well as build proficiency in communicating daily with the health care team.
Four one-year PGY1 resident positions are available starting July 1 each year.
Required Learning Experiences

Required Longitudinal Learning Experiences
- Completion of a practice-related or research project – designed and conducted by the resident, and encouraged to be published in a peer-reviewed journal
- Presentation experience, including journal clubs, in-services and formal continuing education presentations to pharmacy staff

Staffing Commitment
Each resident will staff as both a central and decentralized inpatient pharmacist. Residents are responsible for an average of 32 hours of staffing every four weeks. This includes every fourth weekend and an average of one evening shift per pay period. This is in addition to two holidays over the course of the residency year. These experiences will allow the resident to refine clinical skills, provide evidence-based care plans, and gain confidence as an independent practitioner. Residents also have the opportunity to pick up shifts as a casual pharmacist once the staffing requirement has been satisfied (in accordance with the ASHP Duty Hour Policy).

- Simulation-based and didactic training to prepare for Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification

United Pharmacy
United Hospital’s department of pharmacy is proud of its history developing proficient, independent general practitioners capable of practicing at the top of their licenses. Residency training has been a department priority since 1977. The department is comprised of over 50 pharmacists, most of whom have completed residency or fellowship training and maintain specialized board certifications.
Inpatient pharmacy is open 24/7 and has 16 hours of dedicated decentralized clinical coverage each day. The department operates 2 satellite pharmacies to support a robust surgery program and the Allina Health Cancer Institute. Clinical pharmacy services are complemented by an automated dispensing cabinet system; an EPIC electronic medical record; and safety enhancements including bedside barcoding.
Additionally, our department prides itself on being representative of the communities we serve. Many of our staff have close ties to St Paul and the surrounding area. We have a noteworthy history of career development, with most of our pharmacists being former technicians, interns or residents at United.
About the Twin Cities

Prerequisites
- Pharmacist licensure (or eligibility) in Minnesota - this includes graduates or candidates for graduation from an ACPE accredited degree program (or one in the process of pursuing accreditation) or have a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the NABP.
- Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer. No sponsorship is available for this position.
- Starting January 1, 2022, all United Hospital staff and volunteers are required to be vaccinated against influenza and Covid-19, with limited exceptions.
